Figure drawing at Spring Street this past week. The models were awesome but I wasn't drawing very fast and then I had to meet someone all of a sudden. No emergency, but the big picture is I needed to coordinate with this person sooner than later so I skipped out after about an hour or so of drawing. No one ever seems to be on my schedule!
I'm posting the first 20 minute segment. These were all one minute gestures. The model had a plan and I was fascinated how he was dictating what everyone's pages would look like. About 4 poses in I realized what he was doing and I thought it was cool. He began the first couple of poses with his arms up in the air over his head.This created a lot of long thin shapes on the page.
A little about the process. The first few segments are for warming up your eye and looking and seeing quickly. First 20 minutes are one or two minute gesture poses. In this case there were 20 one minute poses. Five min. break, then another twenty minutes, usually four 5 min poses. then two tens, then on to a 20 minute pose.
I had decided to use this light blue Le Pen marker I've been carrying around for at least a few months in my bag. When I realized how the one minute poses were going I thought this would work out nicely if I switched to a black micron part way through. The whole time I was admiring the personality this guy was projecting with just his pose selection and how he held them. He didn't talk much, but when the woman showed up a little late who was suppose to model with him, the male ball room dancer in him showed up. He told her exactly how he wanted her to pose with his pose and directed her like I've seen male dancers cue their partners about what maneuver is next. They made some great shapes to draw! I wish I had been able to stay the whole time.
I wasn't feeling it this session at Spring Street. The models were fascinating but my brain seemed to have a disconnect with my hand while I was drawing. I haven't been drawing from life as much as I should.
I wasn't crazy that the guy had this long beard covering his chin and collar bone area. I'm trying to get a handle on these intricacies and he's hiding them in hair! I really struggled with the two very different body types as well. They threw my proportions off the whole time. While I am complaining about these things, they are also why I enjoyed this session. I had to look harder. That's a good thing.
This is one of the poses, maybe 10 minutes? that I drew with just a marker. No pencil, just the marker. I was forcing myself to make a decision on a line and live with it instead of measure it out, lightly sketch it in, and then drop in a line. I need to do this a little more it seems.
I kept wanting to draw his head much larger than it was. I was also drawing her lower legs longer than they were as well.
I mean REALLY? Every post has to have a title? I would title it "Post entry no. whatever, but I'm sure if I began numbering them I'd screw up somewhere along the line and there would eventually be 8 number tens.
Busy summer spot of late. Went to my high school reunion back in PA. Nice to see that all us fucked up kids we all were in high school managed to grow up and be fucked up adults. Kidding. I realized I have never matured. Everyone had kids and was concerned with all the things in the world out there that might corrupt their kids as they go out in the world. I have no kids. Having kids is like the longest set up to some crazy game you never realized you were in. Create this little person . Grow them and try to instill some knowledge to prepare them for a world where you won't be to protect them. Then, shoot them out there after 18 to 22 years of prep! See what happens. I've played a few really long Monopoly games but they've never gone more than a few hours.
I had a great time making friends with people I should have known a long time ago but just had to wait until now. Some I remembered a bit but most I hadn't thought about since I got my diploma.
Anyway, here's some stuff I've been doing...
I share a studio with the famous, Molly Crabapple. She had these nice inks (Ecoline) laying around so I snagged a bottle of the blue and tried it out. I was working in my Canson sketch pad so the paper wasn't the thickest. It held up well enough with the pen nib I was using. I also splashed a little watercolor graphite "Art Graf" over the Dr Martin matte ink I like to use. I touched it up a little with white gouache. Holbein gouache, since I seem to be name dropping so much in this post. Sheesh!
